|Nice item, awful packaging,
I ordered a granite mortar and pestle a while ago (not this one, it’s Amazon #B000Y08U1M, 6 Inch Stone Granite Mortar and Pestle 1.5 Cup Capacity). I like it quite a lot so when it came time to buy a wedding present I figured this might be just the thing. I settled on this particular model because I thought they’d like it better… it has a nicely polished exterior which mine doesn’t, and on top of that they’re both Jamie Oliver fans. Unfortunately, the wedding’s coming up rather soon and I still don’t have one to give them. Due to the poor design of the (manufacturer’s) cardboard retainer (which broke and allowed the pestle to fly around loose), the first one arrived with the pestle broken in two. Amazon sent a replacement and the retainer failed again, this time the pestle took a large chip out of the rim of the mortar. Another replacement’s on the way… maybe the third time’s the charm, I’ll let you know.
Note that this is the manufacturer’s packing issue, not Amazon’s… tho perhaps Amazon could help matters by just opening the (unsealed) box and stuffing a wad of paper in there to hold the pestle in place.
Either that, or stop carrying the item until the manufacturer gets it’s act together… shoddy packaging for such a heavy item is no way to make a profit or satisfy customers. Maybe Jamie needs to stop putting his name on stuff made by the lowest bidder.
