I purchased the Midnight Black Butter Bell in early June, 2006, and it worked fantastically well…until the weather got warmer. After a few 100+ degree days where the temperature inside the house was between 75-80 degrees, the butter would fall in a clump from the inverted bell into the water in the holding jar. I ended up putting the whole thing in the refrigerator anyway…which kind of defeats the purpose. I thought it might be the brand of butter I was using, but after trying different brands, I still experienced the same problem. However, I look forward to using the Butter Bell when the weather cools down a bit.

Soft butter all the time!, January 31, 2009

First, I’ve read the other reviews and I know a couple people have had problems with the butter falling into the water. I haven’t used my butter bell through a summer yet, so my review might change when the weather gets warmer, but that’s never happened to me.

So far, it’s been fantastic having soft butter all the time. This thing really works, and it’s amazing (though maybe not always a good thing health-wise) how much more I use butter now that it’s just convenient and there all the time. Before, it was just too much of a pain to either try to spread cold butter onto a piece of bread, or cut off just the right amount and put it in the microwave to heat it up. I ended up destroying lots of bread and wasting lots of butter. So I just quit using butter for the most part, instead switching to softer “spreads” that didn’t taste as good.

Now, though, I use butter all the time without thinking about it. Probably going to turn me into a fat person, but there’s no comparison between margarine and butter on bread or a bagel. Butter just tastes better, and this is the best way to keep it ready for spreading.

This is one of those products that makes you wonder why people ever stopped doing things this way. Sometimes the old ways really were better (and I say that as someone who is not very old!). Butter was meant to be stored at room temperature, not cold. And the only inconvenience to deal with is changing the water every three days (takes all of five seconds) and re-packing the butter when it runs out, which you probably won’t be doing more than once a week. For me, that’s far less hassle than dealing with broken bread or microwaves all the time.

This review is from: Butter Bell Crock, Red (Kitchen)

I had bought this product hoping to settle the butter rage that surfaces every time someone has to try to spread hard butter on something. Alas it has not been our salvation. The butter falls out into the water every time I try to use it. I really don’t see what I could do wrong, I measured the water, packed the butter tightly, tried different temps to no avail. During the times it has stayed in the bell it is wonderful, but I spent too much time fishing the butter out of the water and it is now relegated to a shelf in kitchen limbo.
