Passable but less than expected,
This is only in reference to the Fifth Ed. Though it is very clear that the author knows his stuff I must admit I am somewhat disappointed by this edition. There are far too many blown up screen shots with accompanying text that does little more than recapitulate the information contained within the pictured dialog boxes. I also found it annoying that the text mentions a glossary, which the author emphasizes the importance of perusing, and then, for whatever reason, they neglected to actually include it in the book. To be fair it is advertised as a “Beginner’s” book but I had nonetheless hoped for a bit more technical depth even from this level of presentation. Possibly good for business manager types or others only requiring the most superficial treatment but I could not in good faith recommend this text for IT or CS students and certainly not for anyone actually employed in IT in any capacity.
P.S. Please put the glossary back in, it is really irritating to see it referred to in the text as essential and then find it not included in the book.

|A Beginner’s Guide – For Sure,
I have a little networking knowledge but wanted to get some background and basics before moving on to more advanced netowrking books. However, I found that this book is on a very low level. It’s almost to the point that it doesn’t even give basics because it generalizes so much content. It seldom provides any type of technical explainations so don’t look for any information you may want that really helps technically. What works best with this book, I found, is to use it as a “topic leader” and then after reading each chapter, move to a more advanced or more technical network manual and read about the same subject matter. That way, you get the very basic overview and then in the other books you’ll get the more technical explaination – providing a good comprehensive view of networks. As a stand-alone book it’s quite basic. If this is your first exposure to networks, however, it may be just what you need.
